Research into Chosen Artist

I have chosen to research in to the Pop artist Charli XCX. The reason i have chosen Charli XCX is because she is a quite new artist and her songs fit the type of genre and style of what I am going for. I have also chosen this artist because i like that most of her songs are upbeat and they all have a very light feel to them. They are less serious and more fun which is the type of style i'm looking for. Although them all seem like they have a light and entertaining theme one of her songs in particular has a very strong meaning behind it. This is a clear example that she can also write and perform a song that has meaning and purpose. I have chosen the song Famous by my chosen artist because i'm really fond of the style, beat and meaning of the song. I think this song in particular is the exact style i'm going for. Charli XCX is a British singer and songwriter, she released her debut single independently in 2008. Charli XCX has a very simple and young feel. All of her music video's are very simple, they are just the artist and a very simple set. I feel this is done because she is a new artist and her record label need her to have the most prevalence on screen. Throughout the whole video there are lots and lots of close up's and lots of shots that include just her. Furthermore, the very simple and can be seen as 'childish' or 'immature'. This can be especially seen in the music video for 'Break The Rules'. In this video she can be seen as a type of 'wild child' in school, this is very much shown when she is dancing on the school bus, throwing paper around and by what she wearing. The connection to 'Wild Child' can be obviously seen throughout the shopping scene where her and her friends are trying on outfits not usually considered when going to school. Another reason why she could be seen as 'childish' or 'immature' is because of the text used in most of her video's. Bubble text isn't the type of text you would associate a 25 year old woman with. However, through her use of this type of text and style of video, we are able to see her target audience. We can establish that her target audience are of a young age range for example; 12-early 20's. The reason for this is also established through the lyrics of her songs for example; "I don't want to go to school, I just want to break the rules." in the music video 'Break The Rules'. This can be seen to be targeting the younger generations as they have more connection to school, university, college .e.c.t. Throughout lots of her video's Especially 'Break The Rules', she has a very 'American' vibe.

As there is a very prominent 'American' feel to this music video it shows that her main audience for this video is teenage American's. It feel as though the whole video is targeted towards them as the whole video as this type of style from the type of shop they go to, all the way to when they go to prom. I definitely believe that this is her target audience because this seems to be the running theme throughout. Although she is a British artist i believe that this is her common target audience across her artistry. I believe this is influenced by her record label as this song is signed with Warner Music, which is part of the Warner Bros company. This is an American company which would make sense to why the video is so highly influenced by the American culture.

This is going to help me throughout the process of making my own music video as i am now able to see what external factors can effect a music video and why certain music video are filmed in a certain way. This is also going to help me in my music video as i am able to see how the visuals can effect the lyrics of the song.
