What makes a Good Student Music Video?

What makes a good student Music Video?

There are many different factors that make a student music video good. The in depth consideration of Editing, Camera, Mise-en-scene and representation is instrumental to creating a successful music video. Throughout the piece there needs to be a plethora of different camera angles that makes the video look interesting for the audience to watch, drawing more views to your song and to your video as your audience want to watch it. There needs to be more camera angles than you would add in a film opening, as a music video is usually only just 3-4 minuets long. The piece needs to tell a story in a small amount of time making it harder to achieve a successful music video then i would to make a successful film opening. Music videos usually have a very large amount of camera angles, camera cuts and transitions meaning that when making a music video, you have to shoot scenes more than once.

Camera shot's are something that are vital to a music video and this is something that students should master and really take into consideration to make a successful piece. Another factor that needs to be considered when creating a music video is editing. Editing is quite hard, especially in a music video and this has to be something that students should master to make sure the theme of a music video is not lost.

Editing is quite hard because in a music video the cutting and transitions are quite hard, fast and there is a lot of them. Editing is a major par of making the story come to life through the editing as music video are like really short small films that something transmit a very powerful story. If editing is done in correctly then it means that the music video will look sloppy and very unprofessional. By making sure that editing is perfect will ensure a successful music video.

Mise-en-scene is also another factor that should be well thought about as this include all of the set and costumes. These are also big part of making a music video portray a story and sets the mood for the whole video as this means that the audience can understand the full story. Mise-en-scene is a massive part of the story as this is a factor that 'backs up' the story being told as through the use of costumes and set design. Especially for a student music video the budget it quite small. keeping things simple throughout the music video keeps the budget down however, still allowing the point and the meaning of the video to be portrayed to the audience. Keeping things simple also allows student to keep the budget low and also not over complicating things. Over complicating things can ruin the whole video as it could distort the message of the story. A budget is always advised when creating something like a music video as someone could end up spending lots, causing the over complication.

Representation needs to be thoroughly thought about as this is the different between attracting and not attracting the target audience. Through representation you can target anyone, this is so important for the success of the music video as this is a factor that directly hits the target audience. By adding in something that is attractive or interesting to the audience, it means that they are going to more enticed to watching the video. Throughout the process of making the whole video representation should be considered from the planning stage all the way until the filming stage. Representation should be the driving force behind the video as you have to know what demographic your trying to target.
I have attached two different student films which I believe are a good juxtaposition of eachother. I feel one (When I was your man) has gone through thorough thought when creating the video. This can be seen clearly through the extremely well made shots and well set scenes. However, I feel the other one (stressed out) hasn't gone through the same amount of thought in production due to the random placement of objects and locations in the video.
