Music Video History

Music video History.

Why were music video's created?-
After relocating to the UK in the mid- 1970's, mulcahy made successful music video's for several noted British pop acts- his early UK credits included XTC's "making plans for Nigel" (1979) and his land mark video for the buggles' "video killed the radio star" (1979) which became the first music video played on MTV in 1981.

However, the first ever music video was by Bessie Smith (1929)

who was a blues singer. she appeared in a two-real short film which included her music video. This is the first music video to ever be made with the singer singing their song for public entertainment. A year after this Len Lye made a song with the music video called "experimentation" (1930). Len Lye experimented with Kaleidoscopes and light boxes for the music video. He didn't include any actors of even himself, but just experimented with making different colours and shapes with different items and objects. 10 years later Walt Disney released Fantasia (1940). An animated filmed based around famous pieces of classical music. Two music groups who had a very big influence on the music industry were The Beatles (UK) and The Monkees (US).

These two groups had a very big part to play in the success of music video's as they both started to create videos to what we know them as today. Another things that helped the music industry and helped the success of the music video was the Scopitone jukeboxes which enabled people to chose a song that they like and then see the music video for the song.

What were the most expensive music video's created?-
There are many different music video's that have been created with very large budget's. Mark Romanek, The director of Micheal and Janet Jackson's 'Scream', which is claimed to be the most expensive music video ever made, denies these claims as there are other video's from the same era that cost millions and millions more.

  2. Madonna- 'Express yourself' - cost over $5,000,000
  3. Madonna- 'Bedtime story' - cost over $5,000,000

This is going to help me in making my own music video as it has enabled me to do research into the history and what has made all of these successful music video's make millions and gain worldwide fame. However, these music video's all have high production values which makes it more entertaining  for their target audiences to watch their music video. Another reason why this is helpful when creating my own music video is because it will allow me to see what certain music videos have included to encourage their target audiences to watch their videos.
