Evaluation Question 2- How effective is the combination of the main products (your music videos) and ancillary tasks (digital and magazine advert)?

Question2- How effective is the combination of the main products (your music videos) and ancillary tasks (digipak and magazine advert)?

All of our ancillary products link together through the generic conventions of the pop industry. This can be seen through the continuation of the use of the lips in the magazine advert, Digipak and the visual lips at the end of the music video. We have also continued the bright and vibrant colours throughout the products including the music video. We have done this because this attracts our target audience. We have also used the same type of text which means that audience would easily be able to notice that these all promote this specific artist. The colour purple is also a colour than links all three products together. We have done this because Charli XCX is a female artist and this would therefore attract more of the female audiences as the song is from a female perspective and would therefore be more relational to women. Our music video links to our Digipak as it has a lot of imagery that matches the video for example; the multi coloured lights are something that we were fond of so we added them in to our digipak. We liked this because we thought that this was the most attractive part of the video as this is the aspect of the set that gives the video atmosphere. This atmosphere is attractive to younger audiences because we have chosen to set our music video at a house party. We have made this and the lips the main connection point between all products. This is because we felt that this was the aspect of all three ancillary products that are generic for the pop industry and would be the defining part between all of them that would be most attractive to our target audience. We have also gone for the purple back ground colour which links all three again as this is a female artist and would be more attractive towards women because it is from her perspective and is therefore relatable.

Our magazine advert and our music video link together throughout the purple theme and the glimmer of multicoloured lighting. This is some thing that we felt we would use to connect this two as this was the element in which connoted a party. This is what makes the music video most attractive to my audience as this is the focal point for the whole music video. This was also our focal point for targeting out audience because house parties are usually associated with younger audiences like teenagers. We also included our dancers from the music video in our magazine advert as we felt that this would help connect the two as this gave the magician advert a little more atmosphere. We were fond of this because we felt that just having our artist in the centre of the page was a little boring and a little less attractive for our audience. However, adding these dancers in took a the attention away from the artist so we decided to change the colour of them to make them look black and white to make sure that all of the attentions was on our artist Amber. This was to make sure the audience knew she was the solo artist just incase she was in a girl group for example. However, we went for a little bit of a different photograph for this magazine advert because we felt like putting more attention on the artist so we decided to style her in bright royal blue trousers. While making her stand out from the background and the dancers this also breaks the gender stereotype. Finally, we also link these two products through the lips again. We came up with this as an artist image and something that would help our artist distinguish her from other artist. We also linked the colour of red through the lips and this connotes love and we get that this would link perfectly with our music video as the narrative of our video was about her finding a new love interest. The storyline follows her as she goes to the party and finds this new love interest who she then leaves the party with and ‘happily ever after’.

The magazine advert and the Digipak link very well and these two are the visual advertising products for the artist. This is why we felt that these two needed to link through many different ways; for example the colour, style of clothing, locations etc. We also had to make sure that these products linked well because the magazine advert would be released before the digital would be released. This made us realise that we need to make these two products similar in their themes to make sure our target audience would know that it was Charli XCX’s digital and magazine advert. These two link through the colouring and the lips which are the common them among all three products. These two link a little more than the digital and the music video however, the digital and the magazine advert also use the same type of photos. We did this so that there would be a clear connection between the two. This would also mean that audiences would be most attracted to the photo which would be the same as the digipak. In the photo’s she is also wearing the same clothing which breaks the gender stereotype. These two not only link through imagery but they also link through font style. We decided to use the same text because if we were to change it no one would know what our artists digital looks like. Through the use of vibrant colour these two also connote the image of the artist. This represents the ‘childish’ image of Charli XCX and the type of vibe she goes for when creating music and her video’s. This can also be connoted through the way in which the artist is posing on the front cover of both the digital and the magazine advert. The digipak depicts her holding her cross legs with her cross arms. This connotes a sense of child like behaviour and a vulnerable character. Although the magazine advert photograph is posed in a different way the same vibe can be connoted through the pouted lips and the playing with the hair. We also included the same record label on both, the magazine advert and the digipak, this was to make sure the record label are connected to the artist.

I think as a group we have all worked well together to create a substantial link between all three ancillary products to make sure that our target audience would feel the theme was constant throughout. This would also indicates a clear connection between all of the advertising for the music. If there was no clear correlation between them then the artist wouldn’t be able to benefit from the advertisement of having a digipak or a magazine advert because audiences wouldn’t know where to go to find their music video as the theme is completely different and could be quite disorientating . We also created all three products with the narrative in mind of having a relationship between two of the main characters. This is why we have kept the image of lips throughout. This connotes love especially with the colour red.
